Nikki longs to spend these precious months forgetting the Everneath and trying to reconnect with her boyfriend, Jack, the person most devastated by her disappearanceand the one person she loves more than anything. But there’s just one problem: Cole, the smoldering immortal who enticed her to the Everneath in the first place, has followed Nikki home. Cole wants to take over the throne in the underworld and is convinced Nikki is the key to making it happen. And he’ll do whatever it takes to bring her back, this time as his queen.

As Nikki’s time on the Surface draws to a close and her relationships begin slipping from her grasp, she is forced to make the hardest decision of her life: find a way to cheat fate and remain on the Surface with Jack or return to the Everneath and become Cole’s queen.

Everneath
is a captivating story of love, loss, and immortality from debut author Brodi Ashton.

My Review:

I enjoyed this book a lot.

The story is about, Nikki, who went to Everneath with Cole so that he could take away her pain while he fed on her emotions which he needed to do to survive. Nikki survived the feed, which is rare. She has a chance to join Cole in Everneath and become its queen but instead she chooses to return to her old life on the surface. There's a catch: she only has 6 months before she gets sucked back to Everneath, not as a queen, but as a being who is trapped in the tunnels of endless pain to sustain the Everneath. Aside from her family, the main reason she went back to the surface is because of her boyfriend Jack. The rest of the book is about Nikki getting acclimated back to her life, trying to find a way with Jack to stay on the surface and to thwart Cole's attempts at getting her to go with him to be queen.

One of the things I really liked about the book was the inclusion on mythology. Mainly greek mythology but also others such as Egyptian. I love mythology and have always loved the different myths since I was a kid. I enjoy finding and reading fiction retellings of myths or books that somehow integrate mythology into it. I love reading new spins on myths and mythology that authors write about.

I really liked Nikki. She was such a strong character after she came back from the Everneath. She was steadfast in her decision not to got with Cole and become queen. Even with all the temptations he threw her way she always said no to him, all the while knowing that the fate she chose for herself in the tunnels was going to be an eternal painful one. She also had morals and cared about doing the right thing. To become queen she would have to become an everling and feed off of forfeits. She refused to do that and decided to wait to be sucked back into Everneath. For awhile after her return Nikki was lost. All of her emotions had been drained from Cole feeding on her and the impact of being back in her life was hard for her. She was reclusive, didn't speak and wouldn't even talk to Jack, who she left behind. Nikki was also brave and very loving/caring to her family and friends. She is loyal to Jack and loves him very much.

I absolutely loved Jack. He is one of the best main guy characters ever. We find out that he never gave up on Nikki when she was gone and continued to hope for her return. He is such a sweetheart and he feels deeply for Nikki. He puts her first before himself and will do anything for her. He's loyal, caring, loving and willing to help Nikki in anyway he can.

I liked Cole too. I was kind of expecting him to be a bad ass villain but he wasn't. He was just a being who was doing what he needed to to survive. He needed to feed on someone and Nikki was willing. He is a very determined guy who won't let up on Nikki becoming queen and ruling Everneath with him. He is very persistent to the point of being annoying. In my opinion, he loves Nikki and want to be with her but she doesn't want that. At times he can be petty and jealous, especially of Jack. He also feels helpless because there is no way for him to save Nikki if she won't go with him. He has no power over the Everneath or the shades that rule it. There nothing he can do but watch the tunnels take Nikki. He keeps saying he can't feel because of what he is but throughout this book he shows a lot of emotion, so I think there's more to Everlings or at least him, that wasn't talking about in this book. Maybe in the next one.

I absolutely loved the romance in the book. Its no secret that Jack and Nikki are meant to be together. They both love each other with all their hearts and will do anything for each other. Cole is not even in the running for Nikki. He just something that gets in the way of her and Jack. Nikki and Jack have such a deep connection to each other and their feeling are just as deep. Even while separated during the feeding, all they could think about was each other. Jack dreamt of Nikki every night and Jack's face was the only thing that kept Nikki going through the feed. I almost couldn't take the tension between them when Nikki first returned to the surface. There was no contest for me, I wanted Nikki with Jack the whole time. They just fit perfectly together and their love is so beautiful.

I loved this book and I can't wait to read the next one.
