Book Quotes

Here are some quotes from books that I really like. Beware: Its a lot

"In love. In love with the stoic, the sullen, the eternally morose Varen Nethers?

He would never allow it"

"Just because I wear black and keep a private journal, that doesn't mean I'm going to blow up the school. Or terrorize mindless cheerleaders, for that matter"
                                   ~Nevermore by Kelly Creagh

"So" [Isobel] cleared her throat "What are we doing?"

"We" [Varen] said at last "are doing a project on Poe"
"Didn't he marry his cousin or something?"
"The man is a literary god and that's all you have to say?"

"She'd never been kissed like that before- like the shell of her soul had evaporated"

                                            ~Nevermore by Kelly Creagh

“You're really a blond," she said, her tone just short of accusatory.
"And if you tell anyone, I will come to you in the night and smote your everlasting soul.”

                                                                    ~Nevermore by Kelly Creagh

“His eyes remained on Isobel as he began a slow backward walk. He was doing it again, speaking to her with his eyes. She remained trapped in his stare, trying to hear him, to read the underlying message. Finally his gaze broke from hers and he turned away, walking off through the cafeteria doors.
There was a pause before Gwen spoke.
"Let me guess," she said. "Right now, you're trying to decide if that was hot or annoying." She paused, as though formulating her own opinion.... "It was so totally hot.”

                                                                            ~Nevermore by Kelly Creagh

“I'll come back to get you, too, okay?"
"Why?" he snapped.
"Because," she said with a gasp, unable to fathom the source of his question, or his tone. "Because I love you, that's why.”

                                                                           ~Nevermore by Kelly Creagh

“Danny, give me the phone." Isobel thrust her hand out for the receiver. "And you can forget the five bucks." "I was gonna charge you three-fifty anyway," he said, holding the phone just out of reach. "He knew he hadn't dialed the wrong number, so I had to tell him you were on the crapper.”

                                                                           ~Nevermore by Kelly Creagh

“Isobel's head popped up. "What does 'sagacious' mean?"
"Sagacious," he said, writing, "adjective describing someone in possession of acute mental faculties. Also describing one who might, in a bookstore, think to get up and locate an actual dictionary instead of asking a billion questions.”

                                                                        ~Nevermore by Kelly Creagh

“Hands quivering, she reached toward him.
"Don't." He turned his back to her, facing the door.
That word had stopped her once before. But not now. Not now that she had glimpsed through the funeral front of Varen's own eternal Grim Facade. Despite all the dark armor, the kohl eye liner, the black boots and chains, she saw him clearly now. She peered through the curtain of that cruel calmness, through the death stare and the vampire sentiments and angst and, behind it all, had found true beauty.”

                                                                              ~Nevermore by Kelly Creagh

                                                                    ~Nevermore by Kelly Creagh

                                                                  ~Nevermore by Kelly Creagh

“You think you're different.” Her voice wavered, and she hated sounding so weak. “You think you're all so different,” she went on, louder this time. “You do everything to be different,” she spat. The silence of the table -of the whole cafeteria- was reclaimed in an instant. "But you're not," she said at last. "You are just like every. Body. Else”

                                                                ~Nevermore by Kelly Creagh

“Isobel moved farther into the kitchen, not knowing whether to be relieved that her mother hadn't had an atomic meltdown, or mortified that she'd taken it upon herself to play head chef with the nearest thing Trenton High had to a Dark Lord.”

                                                                 ~Nevermore by Kelly Creagh

"He lifted his hand towards her and even whens he felt his claws graze her cheek she did not pull back.

......
Frowning, Isobel lifted one dust-caked hand and pressed her fingers to the place where Pinfeathers had touched her a moment before.
She lowered her hand and saw a smear of crimson
Blood
......
She moved on, trying to ignore the sharp sting of the scratch that marred her cheek.
But the pain, like the thought of what the wound meant, would not relent.
Pinfeathers.....
The way he had touched her seemed so gentle. Like a caress. But she now knew that he'd inflict the cut on purpose.
It had been his last act of protection. His final warning
His way of telling her that Varen....
                                                          ~Enshadowed by Kelly Creagh

"He was real. This was real. She had found him. She could touch him. She could feel him. Finally they were together. Finally, finally, they could forget this wasted world and go home.

"I knew it wasn't true," she whispered. "I knew you wouldn't stop believing."
He drew her close.
Leaning into him, she felt him press his lips to her forehead in a kiss. As he spoke, the cool metal of his lip ring grazed her skin, causing a shudder to ripple through her body.
"You...."
His voice, low and breathy, reverberated through her, down to the thin soles of her slippers.
"You think your're different," he said.
She felt his hands tighten around hers, gripping hard, too hard.
A streak of violet lightening split the sky, striking close behind them.
"But you're not" Varen said, calling her attention back to him.
Isobel winced, her own hands surrendering under the suddenly crushing pressure of his hold.
A face she did not recognize stared down at her,, one twisted with anger- with hate.
"You," he scarcely more than breathed, "are just like every. Body. Else."
He moved so fast. before she could register his words or the fact that she had once spoken them to him herself, he jerked her to one side.
Isobel felt her feet part from the rock.
Weightlessness took hold of her as she swung out and over the ledge of the cliff.
And he let her go.
The wind whistled its high and lonely song in her ears. She fell away into the oblivion of the storm until she could no longer see the cliff- could no longer see him."
                                                                       ~Enshadowed by Kelly Creagh

"Peering between the shoulders of two of the medical personnel , Isobel did not think the battered and bruised girl on the table looked much like her. And yet she knew by the thin scratch on her cheek that it could be no one else."

                                                                            ~Enshadowed by Kelly Creagh

The pain in her body came first, an intense surge of fire that raged like lava through her veins.
But it could not compare with what followed after.
A wail rose up from her depths. It left her as an inhuman cry. Finally, she remembered everything.”

                                                           ~Enshadowed by Kelly Creagh

"Bending, Varen retrieved from the rubble a small charm, one shaped like a butterfly.
He realized the trinket was a watch only after pressing his thumb to the wings. Snapping apart, they revealed a trio of spinning black hands within.
He could tell the charm was real and not a dream when it didn't dissolve into ash at his command.
She, Isobel, must have brought it with her.
At the thought of her name, a tightness gripped his chest.
He clutched the watch hard in his fist, determined to destroy it, to prove it couldn't be real. That she hadn't come here because of him, for him.
That he hadn't done what he knew he had."
                                             ~Enshadowed by Kelly Creagh

“The mighty hunter,” I quipped as we snuck out the backdoor, escaping into the yard. “He can take down vicious rabids and rampaging boars, but one old lady can make him flee in terror.”
“One scary old lady,” he corrected me, looking relieved to be out of the house. “You didn’t hear what she told me when I got up — you’re so cute I could put you in a pie. Tell me that’s not the creepiest thing you’ve ever heard.” His voice climbed a few octaves, turning shrill and breathy. “Today for dessert, we have apple pie, blueberry pie and Ezekiel pie.”
~The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa

“You are a monster.” Kanin’s deep voice droned in my head again, as I forced myself to move, to walk away. “You will always be a monster, there is no turning back from it. But what type of monster you become is entirely up to you.”
~The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa

“We are vampires, Kanin had told me, on one of our last nights together. It makes no difference who we are, where we came from. Princes, Masters and rabids alike, we are monsters, cut off from humanity. They will never trust us. They will never accept us. We hide in their midst and walk among them, but we are forever separate.

Damned. Alone. You don’t understand now, but you will. There will come a time when the road before you splits, and you must decide your path. Will you choose to become a demon with a human face, or will you fight your demon until the end of time, knowing you will forever struggle alone?”
~The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa

“Yes, poor Darren, forced to cook and clean and do other unmanly things. Next thing you know he’ll be wearing an apron and popping out babies.” He snorted as Darren turned and did something with his hand. “We’re friends, but we’re not that close, Dare.”
~The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa

“A silent road stretched before me, damp with rain and littered with cars. As I watched, pale figures began to slip through the trees or claw their way out of the earth. Rabids edged onto the pavement, filling the road, their hisses and snarls rising into the air. Their empty white eyes blazed with madness and Hunger, and they began to sprint forward .

Reaching back, I drew my blade feeling it rasp free, gleaming as it came into the light. Looking up at the approaching rabids, I smiled.”
~The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa

“Oh, come on. I want to see the big-spiky-ball thing."

"You do not need a flail." Kanin scowled, as though imagining what I could do with it.”

“...called nine-one-one," Howie was saying, "and then I heard something in the alleyway, so I went back there and" --Howie coughed-- "and valiantly attacked his knife with my guts, to no avail."
"Did you get a good look at him? Could you describe him?"
Howie smiled wanly. "Yeah. He was about yay long" --he held up his hands, four inches apart-- "thin, made of steel. Pointy. Sharp.”

“What the hell is going on?" demanded Kami's dad, advancing with his black eyes snapping. Jared blurted, "My intentions are honourable."
Kami sat up straight in her bed and stared in Jared's direction. "Are you completely crazy?" she wanted to know. "This isn't the eighteenth century. How do you think thats going to help?"
"Well, I mean," Jared said, back against the wall like a cornered animal. "When we're older. I mean-"
"Please shut up," Kami begged.
"I agree with Kami," said Dad. "When you're in an abyss-like hole, quit digging.”

“One of the lambs fixed its attention on Jared. “Baa,” it flirted.

“Boo,” said Jared.
“Oh my God, Jared. Don’t tough-talk the lambs.”
"It was giving me a funny look.”
                                               ~Unspoken by Sarah Rees Brennan

“Hark,” he said, his tone very dry. “What stone through yonder window breaks?”
Kami yelled up at him, “It is the east, and Juliet is a jerk!”
Jared abandoned Shakespeare and demanded, “What do you think you’re doing?”
“Throwing a pebble,” said Kami defensively. “Uh… and I’ll pay for the window.”
Jared vanished and Kami was ready to start shouting again, when he reemerged with the pebble clenched in his fist. “This isn’t a pebble! This is a rock.”
“It’s possible that your behaviour has inspired some negative feelings that caused me to pick a slightly overlarge pebble,” Kami admitted.”
                                                             ~Unspoken by Sarah Rees Brennan

“Why are you putting on lip gloss, my daughter?” Dad asked. “Trip to the library? Trip to the nunnery? I hear the nunneries are nice this time of year”

“Is this true, Kami? Are you going out on a date?” Dad asked tragically. “Wearing that? Wouldn’t you fancy a shapeless cardigan instead? You rock a shapeless cardigan, honey.”
                                                              ~Unspoken by Sarah Rees Brennan

“The Lynburns built this town on their blood and bones."

"That was their first mistake," Jared said. "They should've built a city on rock and roll.”
                                                         ~Unspoken by Sarah Rees Brennan

“She clenched her fist in his T-shirt, put her other arm around those too-broad, too-real shoulders. When he tried to pull away, she held on tight. Kami felt the surrender in his mind a moment before he laid his face in the curve of her neck. The whole world was so real it hurt.

Kami whispered into Jared's hair, "I'm always on your side.”
                                                              ~Unspoken by Sarah Rees Brennan

“Kami drew in a slow shuddering breath, and reached out for comfort where she could always find it. I can hear him coming back, she told Jared. I'm scared. [...]

Don't be scared, Jared told her. He won't touch you. I'm coming, and I'm going to kill him.”
                                                                  ~Unspoken by Sarah Rees Brennan

“Have you seen a unicorn in the woods?"

"I imagine that's next," Jared muttered.
"Right," said Holly. "Well. If the unicorn is pink, about two feet tall, with a sparkly mane, we'll know my imaginary friend is real too.”
                                                                 ~Unspoken by Sarah Rees Brennan

“How do you deal with it?" Kami asked Jared. "The laughing at nothing and occasionally stopping dead in your tracks."
"I have a system where when I stop, I lean casually against something," Jared told her. "It makes people think I'm a bad boy. Or possibly that I have a bad back.”
                                                    ~Unspoken by Sarah Rees Brennan

“A leather jacket,” Kami said as he shrugged into it. “Aren’t you trying a little too hard to play into certain bad boy clichés?”

“Nah”, said Jared. “You’re thinking of black leather. Black leather’s for bad boys. It’s all in the color. You wouldn’t think I was a bad boy if I was wearing a pink leather jacket.”
“That’s true,” Kami said. “What I would think of you, I do not know. So what does brown leather mean, then?”
“I’m going for manly,” Jared said. “Maybe a little rugged.”
“It’s bits of dead cow; don’t ask it to perform miracles.”
                                                  ~Unspoken by Sarah Rees Brennan

“Nothing else ever mattered to me, and you weren’t even real. All I ever wanted was you.”

"Katherine..."
"Yes, Damon?"
"Go to hell.”

me, how do I defeat Lokesh?”
“It’s simple. Do to him what I did to you.”
“What? Talk to him in broken English?”

~ Tiger's Destiny by Colleen Houck

"Good-bye bilauta"
~ Tiger's Destiny by Colleen Houck

"And Ren cracked open a jewelry box.
Two strands of tiny beads wound around each other in gold and blue. Small diamond and sapphire flowers ran down the length of the chain and in the center hung a diamond lotus flower with a ruby center. I pressed trembling fingertips to my lips as I recognized Kishan's ring reworked into a new form.......
I turned back to him and as he touched the beads along the edge, he spoke quietly, "Gold and blue tiger's eyes to remember what was found." His finger trailed down to the lotus ruby in the center. "A diamond lotus and red ruby to remember what was lost". He slid two fingers up the length of the chain over the dozens of tiny blue flowers. "And sapphire flowers that symbolize what will be."

"In the loudest voice I could muster, I shouted, "As of this moment, you are no longer the armies of China, Macedonia, Myanmar, Tibet or India. You are now warriors of Durga! We have already fought and overcome many fierce creatures. Now we give you the symbol of their power."
I borrowed the Scarf and touched it to my Pearl Necklace. The silken material sped down each and every soldier to cloak them in the most brilliant red, blue, green, gold and white. Even the flag bearers were not left out and now held banners depicting Durga riding her tiger into battle.
"Red for the heart of a Phoenix that sees through falsehood!" I cheered and raided the trident. "Blue for the Monsters of the Deep that rip apart those who dare to cross their domain! Gold for Metal Birds that cut their enemies with razor beaks! Green for the Horde of Hanuman that comes alive to protect that which is most precious! And white for the Dragons of the Five Oceans, whose cunning and power has no equal!"

"Ren? I begged. Please don't leave me.
You are in my heart. Always. His warm voice whispered softly and then faded away.

"I missed you every hour.  And you know what the worst part was? It caught me completely by surprise. I’d catch myself walking around to find you, not for any reason, just out of habit, because I’d seen something that I wanted to tell you about or because I wanted to hear your voice. And then I’d realize that you weren’t there anymore and every time, <s>every single time</s>, it was like having the wind knocked out of me. I’ve risked my life for you. I’ve walked half the length of Ravka for you and I’d do it again and again and again to be with you, just to starve with you and freeze with you and hear you complain about hard cheese every day. So don’t tell me we don’t belong together,” he said fiercely. He was very close now and my heart was hammering in my chest. “I’m sorry it took me so long to see you, Alina. But I see you now.”
He lowered his head and I felt his lips on mine. "

"After school on Monday, I decided I deserved a break. A little fun in my life for once. So i set aside the whole afternoon to organize the kitchen junk drawer...Then I heard the siren of the new drawer organizer Mom had brought home as a pick me up gift when I was sick, sitting on the counter waiting from someone to place it in a drawer and fill its compartments with tiny items."

"Jared: Look, I'm going to go through your stuff. I'll totally rearrange your obsessively organized book bag"
Alexis: That actually sounded fine, if it would distract him. One of the perks of being obsessively organized is that chances to reorganize things are like little treats."

"A threat to the world will move you?" Pa asked, furrowing his brow. "I can threaten the world. I could brush aside the names of Vlad and Attila, and rain down hell on this earth if it meant freeing my daughter, I could make the Battle of Poirenari look like a Christmas feast. I could tear open the throat of Corvinus's country and leave his blood for the Turks to drink. I could slash the flank of the Turkish Empire and lure in the Polish and let them fight until Doomsday. I've always been a man who fought to create peace, but I could become a man who fights to create chaos. Tell me, Prince Frumous, is that what it would take?"

“There are no good choices, Allison," Kanin offered in a quiet voice. "There are only those you can live with, and those you can work to change.”

“I have good news and bad news The good news is that the jeep is still where we left it, and I got the damned thing working again."
"What's the bad news?"
"Something took my fuzzy dice.”

“Only death will take me away from you, vampire girl," he whispered. "And even then, I'll watch over you from wherever I end up.”

“You will always be a monster - there is no turning back from it. But what kind of monster you become is entirely up to you.”
~ Kanin, The Eternity Cure by Julie Kagawa

“Oh, don't mind me," came an extremely sarcastic voice near the wall. “You two go ahead and make out–I'll just sit here and bleed quietly.”
~ Jackal to Zeke and Allie, The Eternity Cure by Julie Kagawa

“For the rest of my existence, if I lived to see the end of this world, there would never be another Ezekiel Crosse. There would never be another soul as bright as his. And that both terrified me and made me savagely - and maybe selfishly - determined to keep him. Zeke was mine now. Forever.”
~The Eternity Cure by Julie Kagawa

“Well," I ventured as we left Salazar's office, stepping back into the long hallway. I glanced over at Kanin, Zeke and Jackal, and shrugged. "What now?"
Jackal rolled his eyes and stepped away from us. "What now is that I am going to relax for a few hours without listening to the lot of you whine at me. 'Ohhh, don't hurt the humans, ohhh, we have to save refugees from mole men, ohhh, Kanin's dying.' Ugh." He made a disgusted gesture with both hands. "It's enough to make me puke. I am going to the bar to get this taste out of my mouth. You all can do whatever you want.”
~The Eternity Cure by Julie Kagawa

“Now we're going to save a bunch of dirty meatsacks from a bunch of dirty cannibals? Why don't we rescue some orphaned kittens and put food out for stray puppies while we're at it?”
~ Jackal, The Eternity Cure by Julie Kagawa

“I sheathed my blade and glared at him. "And here I almost thought you weren't a complete bastard."
"Well, that's your mistake, not mine.”
~ Allie and Jackal, The Eternity Cure by Julie Kagawa

“Don't tell me you fell something for the little . . . oh.' The vampire blinked, then curled his lip back, disgust and pity crossing his sharp features. 'Oh, sister. Really? That's just sad.”

“So...." He picked a yellow cat skull out of an alcove, turned it toward me, and moved the jaws up and down as he asked, "What do we do now?”
~ Jackal, The Eternity Cure by Julie Kagawa

“What do you think he wants?”…
“Don’t ask me, I’m not a psychotic maniac.” He paused. “Well, not as much of a psychotic maniac.”
Allie and Jackal, The Eternity Cure by Julie Kagawa

“Allison."
I almost collapsed in relief. "Yeah," I whispered, forcing a pained smile as he stared at me as if I were a ghost. "It's me. Damn you, Kanin. You were a pain in the ass to find, you know that?"
Kanin didn't answer. Without warning, his hands rose, pressing to either side of my face as I went rigid. His stare was awed, hopeful, as if he couldn't quite believe I was real and had to touch me to make sure I wasn't a phantom.
"You're here." I barely caught the whisper, and Kanin's eyes closed again as he bowed his head. It was a broken sound, a man desperately grasping at the last thread of hope, when he had been in the darkness for so long. "You came."
And, as I stood, shocked, against the wall of the cell, Kanin sank to his knees in front of me, holding the backs of my legs. The top of his bowed head pressed against my thighs. "You came," he repeated, a chant holding him to sanity. I swallowed the lump in my throat and touched his broad shoulders, biting my lips to keep the tears in check, as the cell door opened with a creak, and the Prince beckoned us both to freedom.”
The Eternity Cure by Julie Kagawa

“He paused, gasping for breath, but continued in a soft, steady voice. "Allie, I...I love you.”
~ Zeke, The Eternity Cure by Julie Kagawa

“I didn't hear the exact moment Sarren ended Zeke's life. I was just aware of his breathing, tagged at first, then seizing up, as if he could no longer gasp for her. And then, a long, agonizingly slow exhale, the last gulp departing his lungs, as Ezekiel's tortured breaths finally, irreversibly, stopped altogether.
"Good night, sweet prince." Sarren crooned, a velvet whisper.
The recording clicked off.”

“You have my promise, vampire girl. I don’t intend to give up. I’ll fight beside you for as long as I can.”
~ Zeke, The Eternity Cure by Julie Kagawa

“Next time you two decide to go on a bloody killing spree, at least send me an invitation so I know that you care.”
~ Jackal, The Eternity Cure by Julie Kagawa

“Lesson learned. I was a monster. I would never forget that again.”
~ Allie, The Eternity Cure by Julie Kagawa

“What's the matter? Scared? Need your big vampire brother to go down first.”
~ Jackal to Allie, The Eternity Cure by Julie Kagawa

“Kanin peered down at me, his impassive gaze softening just a touch. "I am no longer your teacher, Allison," he said quietly. "You have been one of us for a while now. You have hunted, and you have killed. It is not my responsibility to curb you demon." He glanced past me to the place Stick and the men had stood moments before. "And I wanted to see what type of monster you had become.”
The Eternity Cure by Julie Kagawa

“You’re not evil," Zeke said with absolute conviction. "I might have believed that once, but not now."
His hand framed my cheek, brushing my skin. "No one who fights so hard to do the right thing is evil.”

“The hand that rested on my shoulder rubbed it a bit, comfortingly. Then it gave my shoulder a little squeeze. I leaned into him.

Maybe it was that I was broken. Maybe it was just that I was out of my mind. But it occurred to me that I was going to kiss him. The thought just arrived, certain knowledge, delivered from some greater, more knowledgeable place. I was going to kiss him. Stephen would not want to kiss me. He would back up in horror. And yet, I was still going to do it. I reached over, and put my hand against his chest, then I moved closer. I could feel just the very tips of the gentle stubble on his cheek brushing against my skin.

"Rory," he said. But it was a quiet protest, and it went nowhere.

For the first few seconds, he didn't move-he accepted the kiss like you might accept a spoonful of medicine. Then I heard it, a sigh, like he had finally set down a heavy weight.

I was pretty sure we were both kind of terrified, but I was completely sure that we were both doing this. We kissed slowly, very deliberately, coming together and then pulling apart and looking at each other. Then each kiss got longer, and then it didn't stop. Stephen put his hand just under the edge of my shirt, holding it on the spot where the scar was. Sometimes the skin around the scar got cold-now it was warm. Now it was alive.

"So Thorpe says that---Seriously?"

Callum was in the doorway.

Stephen mumbled what I think was a very obscene word right against my mouth.

"You realize I now owe Boo five pounds?" Callum said. "Boo! I owe you five pounds!

"What?" Boo Yelled. "In the toilet."

"She's in the toilet," Callum explained. "Can you not mention this? She said this would happen. She's going to lord this over me."

“Do you ever sing in the car?"
"Generally not. But I am driving a police car."
"I think people would like a singing policeman. Makes life seem more like a musical. Like Foot-tastic."
"You can talk for a long time about nothing."
"I certainly can, you charming man!”

“I remember how, at first, I had felt the tension in his lips, as if he was trying to make a barrier between us - then they had relaxed, parted slightly. And that's when I had known he wanted to kiss me, wanted to give in. That little parting of the lips, the little sigh that came out... I would hear that sigh forever. That little, little sound when the whole world seemed to open up.”
